In a sharp rebuttal to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has categorically stated that no telephone conversation took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump regarding India’s alleged assurance to halt Russian oil purchases. The MEA’s clarification comes after Trump publicly asserted that PM Modi had promised him to reduce India’s dependence on Russian energy imports — a statement now proven baseless.
According to the MEA, there has been no such call or communication between the two leaders in recent months. Officials emphasized that India’s energy decisions are guided entirely by national interest and energy security, not by foreign influence or political claims. India, being the world’s third-largest consumer of oil, sources crude from multiple nations, including Russia, to maintain supply stability and affordable prices for domestic consumers.
The ministry reiterated that India’s energy policy is independent and pragmatic, aimed at safeguarding its citizens from global price volatility. “Our decisions on energy imports are based on what benefits India and ensures our energy security. Suggestions to the contrary are factually incorrect,” the MEA spokesperson said.
The article further highlighted that the last recorded conversation between PM Modi and Trump occurred in October 2020, when Modi congratulated Trump on the peace agreement related to the Gaza issue. There has been no official record of any call between them since then.
Trump’s remarks, made during a campaign speech, alleged that PM Modi had given him personal assurances about stopping Russian oil imports. However, this statement appears to be another instance of political exaggeration, as both U.S. and Indian officials have denied any such commitment.
This incident also underscores the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding India’s energy ties with Russia. Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Western nations have urged India to cut back on Russian oil purchases. Yet, New Delhi has maintained its stance of neutrality, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy while pursuing its economic interests.
By swiftly rejecting Trump’s claims, the MEA has once again affirmed India’s sovereign right to make independent foreign policy decisions. The episode highlights India’s balanced diplomatic approach — staying firm on its principles while maintaining cordial relations with global powers.
In essence, the MEA’s response not only defends factual accuracy but also reinforces India’s position as a confident, self-reliant global player that prioritizes its national interests above political narratives.
